slack has decided to release a limited edition of his
ryu. considering the amount of time that this has been
in the works, i felt that it would be an injustice to
not give this version of the shoto a review. before i
go any further, i'd like to quote slack on one thing.
"He has all his SFII moves, complete with most of
their correct hit properties." why i mention this
will be explained later on.
upon the first initial glance of the character, you notice
that he has 1200 life. Next thing I notice is that there
were at 10 clsn2 boxes on each of the standing sprites.
maybe if the character were large or of a obscure shape,
something like that could be warranted, but there is no
reason for ryu to have those many. this overuse continues
throughout the character. some of the required sprites
are missing as well. upon looking in the sff file, one
finds out that there are dozens of small blank squares
in there taking up space for no reason.
as the first round begins, a blank text box appears at
the top of the screen. you would think that a message
of some significance would appear, put it remains blank,
and then disappears when the around begins. Upon trying
some of the basic ryu moves, i notice that they seem more
sluggish then i remeber them. slack decided to lower the
velocities for moves such as the hadoken and hurricane
kick. it confounds the mind as to why these changes were
made. as for the damage values of the moves, i will use
one example for how well those values were gathered: according
to slack, fierce hadoken's damage was calculated to be
90. after checking sf myself, it turns out that it was
actually 125. although this one shows a reduced value,
that is not consistant with the other values in the character,
as they wavered all over the place. one point of amusement
was that apparently in slack's world, attacking your opponent
with your ass is just as effective as hitting them with
your foot.
the medium shoryuken should be mentioned separately,
as it warrants it. you would think for someone that was
planning as much extras as slack here, he would take the
effort to ensure that the specials worked correctly for
the original mode. upon starting the move, ryu becomes
stuck part way through the move, and leaves ryu feverishly
thrusting the air until the player is forced to reset
the round.
some other words for correct are right, truthful, and
accurate. after playing this character, i can soundly
say that none of the above apply to ryu legend in any
light. apparently, the many lofty words spoken by slack
about these character did not translate into something
that is worth keeping in you characters folder.
