Let me say one thing, before I write this review. I was very skeptical when I started downloading R-9 at how well this would translate into MUGEN. Come on! R-9, from R-type? That's not even a fighting game. That's not even a _platform_ game. How will this work out? I must admit, I even downloaded this character because I thought it would be horrible, and needed something to review for DDM.
The first thing you'll notice about R-9 is that it is a space ship. It's gameplay consists of flying around in circles, attampting to defeat the enemy with a variety of different weapons. The gameplay is very balanced. The main guns deal very little damage, which is good, since the character has the advantage of flight. The main guns can be charged to release multiple other attacks, and missiles and a variety of other guns can also be fired at the enemy. However, R-9's weakness is that it only has 3 lives. Every time you are hit, your ship explodes and you lose a third of your health, which is what I consider a life. It certainly balances things out and keeps things fair.
The graphics are from R-type, and are decent. You can't really go wrong with SNES, and everything is implemented very well.
Want to have real fun in MUGEN? Have R-9 battle it out with another R-9. Things get pretty heated as the two of you attempt to shoot the living crap out of each other while flying in circles around the stage, and things do get very exciting. However, if you want to try something else, download King Fossil from the same website. Play against King Fossil as R-9, and you will have quite a great time. I know I did.
R-9 isn't for everyone. If you like MUGEN strictly as a fighting game, stay far away from R-9. However, if you are open minded and like trying new things, by all means, download R-9 right away. It's like a breath of fresh air in what can be a dull and boring community. With R-9, I was pleasantly surprised. Foxtrot brings great creativity to the MUGEN scene, and I must admit, I have become a fan.
